Kay was born and raised in Baltimore City, where she attended public schools and Baltimore City Community College. She developed a love for writing at a young age, using poetry to express her most intimate thoughts and feelings.
However, it was not until two years ago that an aunt planted the seed of writing. She decided to rise to the challenge and as a result, her debut novel, Obsessive Love was created.
Books2Mention Magazine presents our exclusive interview with Kay Salle.
B2M: Tell our readers about your book, Obsessive Love.
KAY: Obsessive Love is a story about a couple trying to hold on to their love and the breakup of a childhood friendship. Shaffer and Shailey are high School sweethearts ready to take their relationship to the next level; however, Shailey's best friend Missy has an agenda of her own. Despite the fact that Shailey has been a great friend to Missy, especially while aiding her when her mom took ill and died, Missy is determined to get what she wants and she wants Shaffer.
One reckless plot after another Missy is consumed with this "love" she has for Shaffer; so much so that she doesn't realize her own life is in danger.
B2M: Do you write from personal experience or just a wild imagination?
KAY: Both, my book has a little truth to it; you'd have to know me to know which pieces are true. For instance, most of my characters names are family and friends. If I did not use their names than I have their personalities, but majority of it is pure wild imagination.
B2M: Was there a particular character in the book that you enjoyed creating the most?
KAY: I really enjoyed creating Shailey and Chad. To me they are the most unexpected characters. Shailey is the girl next door that has the potential to snap back if pushed too hard, and Chad's character has a window of possibilities.
B2M: What was the most challenging aspect of penning this book?
KAY: Penning the book was actually the most fun. I completed it in six months. The challenge for me was actually getting it published. There is so much to learn. I am still learning from anyone who'll let me.
B2M: What key ingredients do you feel are needed when you are in the process of creating characters that readers can relate to?
KAY: My process is simple. It has to make me laugh, cry, fuss and cuss the characters out as I am creating. If I don't get this affect I am not doing it right and need to back track. These are the things I look for when reading other novels so it has to be in mine.
B2M: What is the central message you hope to send to readers of the book?
KAY: I am hoping when reading my novel the readers are coming away with the message that I feel is often over looked in our communities. MENTAL HEALTH.. so many people are suffering in our community. We all have a family member that we say "don't fool with them they crazy" instead help them get balanced.
B2M: Is there a particular story or issue that you hope to write about someday that you feel strongly about?
KAY: I am so new to writing so I don't have any particular story or issue yet that stands out more than the other. I'll just see where my pen takes me.
B2M: Who are some of your favorite authors?
KAY: Wow! Favorites. First would be Zane, I've been reading her novels for so long. Some others are Kiki Swanson, Ashley & Jaquavis, and T.Styles. I am a diverse reader so if the plot is good, then I'll read.
B2M: What type of advice would you like to offer to aspiring writers?
KAY: To all the Newbies Please Be Careful.. There are so many people offering services it can be overwhelming. I have learned to make friends with other authors. There are some out there that are willing to teach you a few things or at least tell you who to stay away from.
B2M: What can we expect from you next?
KAY: Well, I'm actually working on a few things. I'd like to get my book in E- form, my biggest wish is for it to become a movie, but for now I am working on a sequel Obsessive Love, Stronger Than You'll Ever Know! Kind of cute maybe I'll keep it! :>)
B2M: Kay we encourage you to continue writing interesting books with exciting characters and entertaining plots.
